Shop Your Closet- A Denver Closet Organizer's Guide to Seasonal Wardrobe Transitions

How to Curb That "Must Have" Feeling Without a Denver Personal Shopper

Just because it's Spring, doesn't mean you have to go shopping!

This is advice coming from someone who HAD to shop 4x a year for almost 10 years of my life! (Then I just CHOSE to the next 20 years of my life. 😜)

Working retail was such fun—yep, it's true. We were young, making money, all the things. We had to wear what we sold and that meant MUST HAVES were normal. I can't even imagine if I had that philosophy now, with constant sources of "new releases" being thrown my way.

Denver Closet Organizer Tip: Please don't forget to hide ads on FB and IG. I can't tell you how many clients have said "Instagram made me buy it" this last year as we were putting it in a donate pile.

A Professional Denver Personal Shopper's Secret-You Probably Already Own More Than You Think

Here's the deal...you probably have more than enough choices from last year. Especially with so much crossover with your other seasons. Because this is where the 3rd layer really shines—bring on the denim jackets, cardigans and blazers!

Creative Denver Wardrobe Solutions for Unpredictable Weather

So let's get creative! Let’s look at how you can stretch the versatility, or at least REALLY understand what you have so you know what you need to add.

Depending on your style, and where you live, let's bring in your dressier pieces to your casual life the next couple of months.

Here in Denver, Colorado, we get most of our yearly snow in March/April and almost always Mother's Day. But then we had 65° yesterday and are looking at snow next week, so we're all over the place. 😆

But this will still apply...does the blazer/denim/sneaker look that's popular right now speak to you? The distressed denim jacket with pretty sundresses?

Maybe?

This is where Pinterest really shines. Enter your clothing item in the search bar, add as many variables as you’d like and see what comes up.

So many great ideas, like this look from Simplydaph.

I entered blazer-jeans-sneakers. It gave me loads of options and I scrolled to the one that looked most like me. Can I recreate this with what I have?

Denver Closet Organization Technique- The Grocery Store Test

Try it out. Wear it to the grocery store.

Yep—that's my advice as a professional closet organizer! I will often tell my clients to wear something new to the grocery. It's a place where you don't have the pressure of seeing people you know and will see your reflection often.

Why does that matter? If you are playing with style, and you're not sure you can "pull that off", then going somewhere you have a low level of personal interaction is wonderful. It’s a completely different level of commitment versus showing up to a meeting and having to interact when yo are unsure of your style. You also get to see what you look like in the produce mirrors or the reflection of the freezer doors. Sounds silly, but it works.

You can figure out pretty quickly whether an outfit is just a bit out of your comfort zone and you're warming up to it, or whether it's just not you.

Best part? You didn't buy anything, you just played around with what you had!

How a Denver Personal Shopper Can Transform Your Existing Wardrobe

There's loads of ideas on how to make sure you have gone through last year's Spring wardrobe thoughtfully before you run out and shop. Here are some professional closet organization strategies to help you rediscover your wardrobe.

  • Complete a seasonal wardrobe audit - Try on everything from last spring/summer before buying new items. This is the time to get rid of the things that are stained and torn as well as pieces that don’t fit. (Get those in another spot!)

  • Create new outfit combinations - Mix unexpected pieces together (like that blazer with casual jeans)

  • Identify wardrobe gaps strategically - Note only what's truly missing, not what's trendy. Or if you’d like to bring in a trending piece, you can do it with intention, instead of being influenced.

  • Shop with purpose - If you do need to shop, create a specific list based on your audit. It keeps you on track with the boundaries you’ve made with your budget.

  • Document successful outfits - Take photos of combinations you love to remember them. I always have my clients make a folder in their phone to put photos of new outfits or screenshots of what they’re looking for. Call it “Outfit Inspo!”
