3 Quick Closet Decluttering Tips from a Denver Closet Organizer (that don’t have anything to do with clothing!)

Professional Organizer Secrets-beyond clothing management

No, it won't be this intense, I promise. 😉 Yet, I know from the hundreds of closets I have been in as a Denver closet organizer, you may need to grab a small trash bag/recycle bin and get it sorted.

There are 3 sneaky categories of miscellaneous things that creep in and then suddenly you are feeling like your closet is cluttered. I've fallen prey to all 3 of them—I get it. But I've also solved it, and it feels sooooo good!

Denver Professional Organizer Tip #1- Remove Non-Wardrobe Items

Keep your closet clutter-free and look for ANYTHING that has NOTHING to do with the clothing, shoes or accessories you put on your body.

Unless it's a fashion statement, it doesn't belong in there.

Take a deep breath and start with the hidden corners of your wardrobe. Toss out those rogue papers, beauty products and that random stuff you stashed there and forgot about. Stashing can be a big clutter problem!

(My issue was the Christmas presents I stash throughout the year—I've since found a better place!)

What Denver Closet Organizers Recommend Instead

Put it to good use! I'm talking about all those beauty samples of lotions, mascaras, sample perfumes. A couple years ago I had had it with the basket of sample things I was keeping for "travel" or "just in case".

If I didn't like it and it was unused, it went to the donate pile. Just because I don't like lavender smelling lotion doesn't mean someone else wouldn't! Dress for Success takes new toiletries, as well as local shelters. Or gosh, just give it to a girlfriend!

If I did like it—I used it up. Whaaat? I know, crazy.😏 The problem was, I never used these things for travel and "just in case" never came.

Or if it's essential, like receipts you need to keep, take that stack to your desk and file them! Find a more fitting home elsewhere.

Denver Professional Organizer Tip #2- Tackle the Shopping Bag Collection

Let's talk about the elephants in our closets...the army of bags that we never use. 🐘 But seriously, how many do we really need? If you can't remember the last time you used any of them, it's time to let them go.

What Professional Denver Closet Organizers Suggest

Recycle them, or use them! You can store your gift-wrapping gear, or get creative and use them for crafts. I'm sure there are a million uses you can find for paper shopping bags, and if that stresses you out then I give you permission to chuck them in the recycle bin.

Whatever you do, don't let them hog your closet space. Let's make room for things we actually use.

Denver Closet Organizer Tip #3- Eliminate Hidden Garbage

The 3rd tip is a sneaky one…Garbage, garbage everywhere! I've seen it all - from clothing tags to shoe packaging, dry-cleaning bags, and more. All lurking in closets, slowly multiplying over time. It goes overlooked until it doesn't if you know what I mean!

Professional Organizer Solution

The obvious answer is to just chuck it! But the more important answer is to solve the problem. Make it a no-brainer by setting up a mini trash can in your closet, or just outside it, and voila! No more bits of paper, tags etc.

I bought a small trashcan, and yes it fills up faster, but it saves me from walking out of my room to the closest one in my office, which of course seemed to be way too much work. 🙄

I wonder why we are like this sometimes?

I figured don't fight it, just find a solution. If it takes a $15 trash bin to help you keep your closet clean and pretty, it's a small price to pay!
